Every woven
fabric has a warp, the longitudinal threads
of the fabric, and a weft, the threads that
go horizontally across. Jamdaani is a
supplementary (or extra) weft that is
introduced wherever the design is to be
placed and woven into that selected place
only. It serves as just decoration and is
not a part of the textile’s structure in the
way that the regular warp and weft are. |

The word
Jamdani has its origins in Persian, and it
means “flower vase”. Jamdani is famous in
West Bengal and Bangladesh, where thin
cotton sarees are woven with traditional
designs in Jamdani all over it. Sometimes,
the jamdani alone was done in a silver or
gold thread. |

|
The Jamdani or
extra weft technique is also practised
extensively in Varanasi, where the famous
brocade sarees are woven using this
technique. |
